Growth Rate & Care

Lantana prefers full sun and grows best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and thrives in hot, dry conditions. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot and reduced flowering. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced formula—too much nitrogen can cause lush foliage at the expense of blooms. In containers, monthly feeding with a diluted liquid fertilizer helps maintain vigor.

Prune lantana in early spring to remove woody growth and encourage fresh blooms. Light trimming throughout the season can promote branching and reblooming. Deadheading spent flowers isn’t required, but it can enhance appearance and prevent seed formation. Some sterile varieties, like ‘New Gold’ or ‘Luscious Royale Red Zone’, focus energy on flowering rather than seed production, making them ideal for continuous color.

Lantana is deer-resistant, salt-tolerant, and attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. It’s generally pest-free, though whiteflies and spider mites may appear in stressed conditions. Good air circulation and proper watering help prevent powdery mildew and other fungal issues. Be aware: all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, especially the berries, so avoid planting near play areas or pet zones.
